Power Steering Pump

Overview

The replacement of power steering pump is very straight forward. The only thing you have to worry about is aligning power steering lines properly without stripping the pump's threads.

Instructions

  • Use a pump to drain all the fluid out in a container from power steering reservoir, make sure you have new CHF fluid (I will stress again to use CHF fluid that comes in a metal can).
  • If you want you can replace the V-Belt, but it's not required to take the V-Belt off for this job.
  • Jack the car up in the front and secure it on jack stands.
  • Remove big hose from the rear of the pulley, expect fluid to pour out. Do not let the fluid get anywhere that might be damaged. It will eat paint.
  • Wait until it stops dripping and remove smaller hose located on the side of a pulley (17MM)
  • Remove two bolts holding the pulley in the front. Use a small extension for this. One bolt in on a bottom corner of the pulley and other is where the belt is routing. Stick the wrench in between the belt and wrench away.
  • Remove the bolt that holds the top part of the pulley and extends all the way in the back of it.
  • Carefully slide the pulley off towards the radiator and take it out.

Installation / Aligning Hoses

Installation of the pump is pretty much reverse of removal except you will most likely have problems with properly aligning hoses while torquing down the bolts. (Don't forget to put the pump pulley on the belt if you did not take the V-Belt off!) You should also carb clean everything after so you can spot the leaks.

  • DO NOT USE ANY TYPE OF WRENCH/TOOLS WHEN SCREWING IN THE BOLTS HOLDING THE POWER STEERING LINES or you will risk of stripping your $400 power steering pump and ruining it because bolt was not

properly aligned with the force of steering line pulling it slightly to the side.

  • YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SCREW THE BOLTS ALL THE WAY IN BY HAND WITH EASE UNTIL THE POWER STEERING LINE IS FLUSH AGAINST THE PUMP IF THERE IS ANY RESISTANCE STOP, THE BOLT IS NOT ALIGNED OR THE STEERING LINE IS PULLING TOO HARD TO A CERTAIN DIRECTION
  • It's best to position pump in place and let it hang slightly on the top long threaded bolt to make alignment easier.
  • Start with the rear line (bigger) and attempt to align the pump at same angle so it appears flush against the line. Use your hands and slowly start tighting up the bolt. If bolt does not appear straight, you are

not aligning pump to the line properly. Start over. If bolt is straight but you have resistance turning it by hand, try pushing steering line to a side a little so it does not create side pressure on the bolt.

  • Repeat same steps for a smaller line that goes into the side of the pump.

Bleeding

After installation of new pump put the new fluid in without closing the cap for the fluid reservoir. Start the car, check for big leaks then lower the car and put the wheel all the way to the right wait 1-2 sec and move it all the way to the left. Repeat 5-6 times then close the reservoir and check for leaks again.

Torque Specifications

  • Pulley to pump (3 bolts): 15 Nm
  • Front bolts connecting pulley to engine: 25 Nm
  • Big power steering line in rear of the pump: 45 Nm
  • Smaller power steering line on a side of the pump: 42 Nm
