Overview

This section will attempt to identify element(s) causing hesitation or slight stumble when starting your car.

Basic Maintenance

First thing is to see when was the last time you performed basic maintenance. Make sure your spark plugs, oil, coil and coil boots are in check. Running summer oil in winter will cause engine to turn over at a slower rate. Read about spark plug replacement here: [Spark Plugs].

Battery / Alternator

  • Check batteries acid level, clean terminals (and make sure they are tight) within battery terminal cleaner/etc. Check the voltage across terminals per [Checking Electrical Components]
  • Check belt driving your alternator, a loose belt will cause loss of charging to your battery
  • Turn your high beams and start the car, if they dim you battery will need to be replaced
  • Get a free alternator/battery load test at your local auto store

Air / Fuel Mixture

Rear Main Oil Seal

  • Leaking rear main oil seal will coat your starter in oil, jack up the car and look at starter. If it's covered in oil use electrical cleaner and spray it all over the starter. Inspect condition of starter wiring.
